8 New Hotels in China in the Year of the Dog

As the Chinese New Year of the Dog approaches, it seems a good time to look forward to some of the more hotly anticipated new hotels we can expect to see open in the mainland over the next 12 months.

 

The Middle House Shanghai

The eagerly awaited sister property to Swire’s collection of Houses in Beijing, Hong Kong and Chengdu promises to be a magnet for Shanghai sophisticates and plugged in travellers from around the world. Located in the cool Jing An District of Shanghai, it features swimming pools, gardens, a spa and a branch of the successful Cafe Gray from the Upper House Hong Kong.

To Open: March/April 2018

The Sukhothai Shanghai 

Adjacent to The Middle House on Nanjing Road West will be The Sukhothai Shanghai, marking the first attempt by owning company HKR International to leverage the success of The Sukhothai Bangkok and turn it into a brand. The hotel will also feature some of the Sukhothai Bangkok’s successful outlets including La Scala Italian restaurant and the Zuk Bar. The hotel will have 171 guest rooms and 34 suites.

Mandarin Oriental Qianmen Beijing

Mandarin Oriental Qianmen will be a luxury boutique hotel of just 72 hutong-inspired courtyard suites in a regenerated historic district near Tiananmen Square. This marks Mandarin Oriental’s long-awaited debut in the capital since the previously planned Mandarin Oriental Beijing was unfortunately destroyed by fire some years ago before it had chance to open.

The hotel will also feature a variety of dining venues within the hutong courtyards, including an all-day dining concept with a roof terrace, a Chinese restaurant, a lobby lounge, a traditional tea lounge and a signature Mandarin cake shop.

The PuXuan Hotel in Beijing 

If you are familiar with the glamorous PuLi in Shanghai, then you’ll be pleased to know that an equally stylish younger sister, the PuXuan, is due to open shortly in Beijing.

Located in Wangfujing near the Forbidden City, The PuXuan Hotel and Spa promises to be “a new, modernist state-of-the-art masterpiece … paying respectful yet contemporary homage to one of the capital’s most important and distinct quarters.”

To Open: Q1 of 2018

The Shanghai EDITION

The uber stylish hotel brand of hotelier Ian Schrager powered by Marriott is set for massive expansion this year and the Shanghai property will be one its flagships in the Asian region.

The Shanghai EDITION, located at the northeast corner of Nanjing Road East and Henan Road, West of Huangpu River and just a 5 minute walk from The Bund. It is comprised of two separate towers featuring 145 guest rooms and 10 levels of public space including 5 meeting studios and 2 forums. Food and beverage outlets include a signature Japanese restaurant on the 27th floor, a Cantonese dining venue featuring 5 private dining rooms, an all-day dining venue, 3 lounge bars, an indoor nightlife venue and 2 rooftop bars.

Anandi Resort & Spa Shanghai

Anandi Resort & Spa is an independent property and the first luxury contemporary hotel in the Hongqiao district of Shanghai. It is strongly focused on wellness, based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and offers wellness retreats as well as a fully integrated wellness component in all stays. It is also a member of the Healing Hotels of the World, in addition to Leading Hotels of the World.

Bvlgari Hotel Shanghai

The Bulgari Hotel Shanghai is due to open later this year and comprises just 63 rooms and 19 suites. Part of the Suhe Creek development, the hotel features sweeping views of the Bund and of Pudong’s dramatic skyline.

All accommodation features exquisite Italian design by Antonio Citterio and Patricia Viel, with hand-crafted Italian furniture, rich natural fabrics and state-of-the-art technology. With an average size of over 60-square-metres, the hotel rooms will be some of the most spacious in the city. The hotel will also include a 2,000-square-metre BVLGARI SPA and fitness centre, and a rooftop Italian restaurant and bar which aims to become one of the most fashionable venues in Shanghai.

Atlantis Sanya

The long-awaited Atlantis, Sanya Hainan will encompass 540,000 square meters of larger than life experiences built around the myth of The Lost City of Atlantis. Expect to find twisting waterslides, dolphins and sealions, and the largest open-air aquarium in the world. The mega resort features no less than 21 different restaurants, cafes, lounges, and bars that include the signature Ossiano Underwater Restaurant and Bar, as well as celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay’s Bread Street Kitchen and Bar. There are also some underwater rooms and suites.
